Real Fit at Every Age was an eye-opener for me. Growing up in a US western-centered home, there are many points from a Chinese medicine perspective that I just would not have thought of without the book. One in particular is the attitude during pregnancy. My wife will be pregnant soon, and it's important to us to do what is best for the health of our baby, and also my wife. She has great concerns about losing her health in exchange for our child's. Julie de Lagarde opened my eyes to know when and how it is best for her to exercise. What was particularly surprising was the Chinese paradigm that exercise should be in very gentle movements in the first trimester, and increase in activity as the baby grows and becomes more active. This is just one example of something I would not have thought of otherwise, and why I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a different than what we typically get in western society.
I have been so encouraged by Real Fit at Every Age. It’s not your average fitness book– she combines her experience as a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner with her experience as an athlete as well as someone who had lost her joy of movement for a number of years, to show the way back into the joy of movement and health. That really resonated with me. I believe we’re made to move and find deep delight and health through taking our bodies through their paces in a healthy way.

She addresses all the issues that may arise– adrenal fatigue, age, injury, inertia are just a few– and has such a refreshing attitude about getting strong again and enjoying the fact that we are made to move. If you are wanting to strengthen your body and move more, I would definitely encourage you to pick up this book– it’s great.
I have long been a fan of Julie Festa de Lagarde's blog realfitmama.org, so I was thrilled when my husband purchased her book, 'Real Fit At Any Age' for my birthday! Julie is a wonderful writer, acupuncturist, herbalist, holistic practitioner tai chi practitioner, dancer, surfer and mother who believes strongly that people of all ages can find ways to move and exercise, even if they have disabilities, chronic illness and rare disorders like I do.
By reading (and rereading!) Julie's book, was able to learn how to create more nutritious meals for my family, which provide us with the energy to be more active. Although I am extremely limited in movement, balance and stamina, Julie's book helped inspire me to try to focus on things I can do, like dancing in the living room with my two daughters, if even just for the length of one song, and setting a goal to walk to the end of my street and back each morning with my dog and youngest daughter, instead of falling into the trap of thinking I am incapable of any exercise or movement due to the effects of my disability and chronic pain.
I am so happy to engage in fun activities with my family that get my body moving without too much strain. My children are great motivators because while they know that I am in constant, quite awful pain and I'm likely facing at least one more brain surgery, their faces light up with joy when I say yes to going to play at the park down the road, as opposed to the constant no which had been my automatic response before reading this book. I am excited about getting fit, and losing some excess weight gained from undergoing several surgeries and countless procedures these past few years, and then being bedridden until I healed enough to walk around my house again.
I am so glad there is an alternative way to be fit and healthy that works for me and my unique needs, involves my children in play and does not require traditional gym workouts or exercise classes! I highly recommend 'Real Fit at Any Age A Fitness Guide to Optimal Health from 1 to 100.' It has made a positive, dramatic improvement in my life, and I'm positive it will for you as well!
Easy read, informative and motivational. Makes you think that any type of movement us worth getting up!
I absolutely love this book! I'm currently in the weight loss process and my husband has a terribly bad back. This book is going to help us so much and encourage us to get fit. I love reading about the benefits of exercise and this book is loaded with tips and ideas to get you as fit as you want to be. I love how Julie incorporates Chinese medicine and the traditional ways of eating. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

This book is a game changer. Very inspiring and informative especially in terms of adapting physical activity/levels for every stage in life. It shows you how to incorporate exercise into your daily routine without necessarily becoming a slave to the gym. It encourages you to come from a place of self love and nurturance, while challenging your body to achieve its peak fitness. Full of helpful tips and pointers. Great read for those who adopt fitness as a lifestyle as opposed to quick fix.
