Danger and hilarity collide in this adventurous tale of a shy, teenage boy trying to escape his abusive father by seeking solace in video games and fervently wishing he were somewhere else. Wishful thinking doesn't usually accomplish much, but in this case, his desperation wakens a latent power that forges a real connection between Worlds.
Jericka, the young and feisty sheriff of Ahnyalsiath, finds herself faced with multiple problems when a destructive stranger begins rampaging through her erstwhile peaceful town. She was stationed there to keep her out of trouble, but not only does Trouble seem to have it out for her, it's going after the entire country, too!

It's hard to find a book with a unique writing style that has grip, a clever plot, and fleshed out characters that I can relate to. The Hidden Level is exactly that kind of unique book, and it left me completely satisfied... Except for the fact that I'm dying to read book 2 now! Ha!The characters were very fun and full of life, and I found I could relate to them very well. The plot was a blast and the storytelling very well preformed!
I will admit that I was a little disappointed by the shortness of the book, but that made it a refreshing, easy read, giving my brain a break from the complicated 500 page books I normally read.
There were a few things that could have been a little better polished by the editor, a few lines that could've had different wording, been shorter and prettier, but they weren't frequent or bad enough to interrupt the flow of the story. If those sorts of things bother you to where you can't finish the story, then you don't really read for pleasure and you should go back to your grammar Nazi desk now, college professor. ;-)
The only other con I have to list about this book is that I would rate it PG13 because of the use of some language. Only a few uses of d*mn, sh*t, and b*tch, and not by the main characters themselves, but still enough that I wouldn't suggest it to any kids I know under 13.
Overall, though, this was a fantastic book, and I can't wait to chomp my way through the other two!
Give my compliments to the author and bring me the second book to feast on!

The Hidden Level The Hidden Level Series Book 1 edition by A J Bakke Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Brandon's only respite from the brutal treatment of his violent father is to escape into video games. But his "escape" is about to become literally true. Somehow his latest game acquisition turns out to be a real (magical) link with Earth's sister planet (in another dimension), Deart, and Brandon winds up crossing the barrier that separates the worlds. Brandon has to find the courage to become a real life hero. Well-drawn characters, lots of action, and some scary moments. And cats.
